TC Offers New 3-Day Summer School Format Reducing Student Commute Time

Starting this summer, academic courses for summer school at Texarkana College will be offered three days per week (Monday, Tuesday & Wednesday) instead of four. Dr. Donna McDaniel, VP of Instruction, said student input drove the decision to offer classes in a three-day format.

“We took a survey of our current students and asked their preference on the number of days a course meets during a summer term,” said McDaniel. “Students responded positively to the concept of a three-day schedule saying it would reduce their commute time to campus and free up the remainder of their week so they could work more, go on family vacations, and have more time to complete class assignments.”

McDaniel said the new 3-day schedule has been released and registration is now open with the anticipation of classes quickly filling up.

“Classes fill up fast for summer terms- especially our two-week Mini-Mesters,” said McDaniel. “We anticipate even more interest this year than in the past due to our new 3-day schedule.”

McDaniel said people are often surprised at the number of degrees and course formats offered at TC, noting that classes are available online as well as through traditional classroom, laboratory, and hands-on technical and creative training environments.

“You can get your start in almost any career here at TC,” said McDaniel. “If you are seeking a traditional degree path leading toward a bachelor’s degree, you will save thousands of dollars by taking up to 60 semester credit hours here and then transferring to a university to complete. If you are wanting to go into a technical or medical field, we have the most comprehensive line-up of degrees and courses of any institution in our region. You can earn a workforce degree or certificate in a very short time that opens up doors in the field of nursing, pharmacy technology, welding, industrial technology, culinary, cosmetology, construction, office careers, and more.”

McDaniel said academic summer school courses at TC offer university students home from the summer an affordable way to pick up courses they need for their degree while they are at home for the summer.

“Students who are enrolled in universities and who are home for the summer can enroll at TC as “transient students” and save a lot of time and money toward their degree,” said McDaniel. “This is a great place to tackle tough academic subjects you dread taking in a large, overwhelming university setting. Class sizes are small at TC, and instructors have years of experience in some of the most difficult

subjects including anatomy and physiology, chemistry, advanced math courses, as well as literature and writing courses, just to name a few. Our instructors want you to be successful and will provide support to get you through tough courses.”

McDaniel said current high school students can also enroll as an “early admission” students this summer and get ahead of the game.

“High school students who are eager to get a head start on their college degree can take courses this summer,” said McDaniel. “Every spring, we have high school students who graduate with an associate degree at the same time as they graduate from high school. These students have taken advantage of early admission options during summer sessions as well as dual credit courses offered during the school year on their high school campus.”

McDaniel said TC web-based, online courses offer maximum flexibility for students needing to balance busy work and family schedules.

“If you’re web-savvy and dedicated, web classes are a great way to earn college credit—and you can do most of your coursework at home in your pajamas,” said McDaniel. “TC web classes are available during all semesters enabling students to take just one class at a time, or actually complete an entire associate degree online.”

McDaniel said new students are encouraged to tour the campus and see the classrooms and learning environments for themselves.

“Our recruiters are happy to show you around and introduce you to our academic advisors and financial aid specialists,” said McDaniel. “On your tour, you can also go inside classrooms, labs, and workshop areas where hands-on learning takes place. We have a beautiful, functional campus and we welcome you to come for a visit!”
