Financial Aid Coordinator – Veterans Affairs / Compliance

Provides information and guidance to students and others regarding Financial Aid and the Department of Veteran Affairs educational benefits, eligibility, and educational objectives. Assists the Executive Director with monitoring and maintaining regulatory compliance.

Qualifications:

Education/Certification:

  • Bachelor’s degree or a combination of relevant experience, education and training that equates to the required degree.

Special Knowledge/Skills:

  • Knowledge of automated processing
  • Knowledge and interpreting of federal and state rules and regulations, guidelines and procedures related to student financial aid programs.
  • Skill in entering data accurately, making simple calculations and knowledge of supervisory techniques
  • Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing.
  • Must possess required knowledge and be able to explain and demonstrate with or without reasonable accommodations, that the essential functions of the job can be performed.

  • Processes for providing academic advising to veteran students
  • Enrollment processes for disabled veterans under the Vocational Rehabilitation Program.
  • Maintaining an established work schedule
  • Effectively using interpersonal and communication skills including tact and diplomacy.
  • Effectively using organizational and planning skills with attention to detail and follow through.
  • Complying with federal and state veterans affairs regulations.
  • Reviewing financial aid applications and certifying veteran student’s entitlements for educational benefits.
  • Maintaining confidentiality of work-related information and materials.
  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships

Experience:

  • Two-year experience working in either financial aid, veteran’s affairs, and/or related work experience.
  • Preferred Interviewing and counseling work experience.

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Reviews, verifies and analyzes financial aid applications and documents to determine the type and amount of financial aid available to students.
  • Calculate awards according to federal regulations and guidelines.
  • Collects and/or reviews financial aid applications to determine completeness and eligibility for financial aid.
  • Verifies accuracy of documents and consistency of data from need analysis processor, federal tax returns, financial aid transcripts verification document, and student information; performs data analysis to identify discrepancies in data and determines action for resolution; request additional information for incomplete or inconsistent applications.
  • Processes application according to federal guidelines or regulations; denies aid if ineligible; appropriate award donors, adjustment, changes and/or corrections.
  • Answer questions, inquires or requests of students, parents, lenders, guarantee agencies or staff person, in writing or by telephone regarding financial aid eligibility and awards.
  • Input information, changes, corrections or new awards into database.
  • Participates in the annual audit of student records and record retention requirements
  • Maintain quality control of manual and automated data and provide for accurate and timely processing applications.
  • Provide information and guidance to students and parents in the areas of Department of Veteran Affairs (DVA) educational benefits and eligibility, educational objectives and degree/vocational opportunities.
  • Assists students in applying for a wide variety of DVA programs.
  • Interprets and applies federal and state regulations to all aspects of student aid programs, and specializes in Veteran student aid.
  • Reviews academic evaluations, enrollment, and student requirements to insure compliance with DVA, TWC regulations, and ACC policies and procedures.
  • Prepares and reviews appropriate documentation necessary for certification of student’s veteran’s educational entitlements to DVA educational benefits.
  • Monitors veteran student’s academic progress, course enrollment, and other reporting requirements to DVA.
  • Acts as a liaison between DVA Vocational Rehabilitation Specialist and disabled veterans; controls issuance of forms used to cover educational costs.

Salary Range:

Commensurate within the Texarkana College pay scale for position.
