‘Batman v. Superman’ tolerable

This past weekend, I had the unfortunate experience of watching the new “Batman v Superman” movie.

Why was it an unfortunate experience, you ask? Having seen numerous Batman and Superman movies, I have a certain amount of expectations from the actors chosen to play those roles.

Since the film contained numerous classic superheroes, the director, Zach Snyder left himself open to judgement from hardcore fans.

Batman, also known as Bruce Wayne, was played by Ben Affleck. The only thing I can say about Affleck as Batman is “what was Zach Snyder thinking?”

How does Ben Affleck even begin to be a choice for that role? Not only did he play the part like the entire movie was a scene from The God Father, but his appearance didn’t even fit the bill. When I think of Batman, I think ruggedly handsome, chiseled jawline, mysterious, and the body of a Greek God. But what did I get? Ben Affleck! Yes, he beefed himself up for the film, but he still looked like a guy you would find drunk off his rear end in a trailer park. As if Batman wasn’t enough to ruin the film, but then Snyder cast Amy Adams as Lois Lane. Every Lois Lane I have ever seen has been plainly beautiful, young and brunette. With Amy Adams as Lois Lane, we got an aging red head, whose looks are fleeting faster than money in a casino. Adams did a fair job of portraying Lois Lane’s character, but physically, she will never be Lois Lane.

Thankfully, Snyder was redeemed in his choices for Superman, Wonder Woman and Lex Luthor.

Superman, played by Henry Cavill, was absolutely perfect. Perfectly built, young, chiseled jaw, perfectly placed hair; he was born to play Superman. The same is true for the actress who played Wonder Woman, Gal Gadot. Gadot’s depiction of Wonder Woman was spot on, from her appearance to the confidence she portrayed on screen. Even if they went back in time and used a youthful Linda Carter, they could not have chosen a better Wonder Woman. Though I feared Jesse Eisenberg playing Lex Luthor would kill the movie, I was completely wrong. Eisenberg’s acting was on point. He is no stranger to playing a super genius on screen, but he added a touch of evil and a whole lot of psychotic to his role of Lex Luthor. Job well done.

The backstory in the beginning of the film was far too long, but the edge of your seat action and tragic, unforeseen ending, saved the movie. All in all, the film was tolerable, but not something I will watch more than once.
