Texarkana College clubs are already beginning to meet this academic year.

Zeta Sigma Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society met today to discuss projects and work on their Competitive Edge program.

“PTK is a great organization to better yourself with and get involved,” said chapter president Addyson Hill.

PTK members will be focusing on a College Project and an Honors in Action Project each year. Mary Ellen Young, dean of Liberal and Performing Arts, is also advisor of Phi Theta Kappa – Zeta Sigma Chapter.

The Honors in Action Project consist of choosing a topic and researching it to design a project that illustrates how the topic impacts local and global communities. The topics were decided by PTK headquarters in Jackson, Miss.

The College Project will focus on students attending Texarkana College.

Dr. Tonja Mackey, the executive director of the Palmer Memorial Library, met with PTK members to help them delve into the research needed for both projects.

Earlier this week, the STEM Club held a membership drive Sept. 5 on campus.

The STEM Club is open to current TC students to join, and non-members are welcome to attend events too.

The next event will be hosted by Friends United for a Safe Environment (FUSE) at the Texarkana Public Library on Sept. 12. The guest speaker will be Luis Castilla from Public Citizen in Austin. He will be speaking about the effects of climate change in the region.

For more information about this event, request to join the “Texarkana College STEM Club” Facebook page or contact Dr. Catherine Howard, dean of STEM.

The Creative Writing Club will be meeting every other Friday at 4:15 p.m. at Books-A-Million.

At the first meeting, members started off with introductions, fun discussion, and worked on an easy ready-writing prompt.

Jesse Hausler, the club’s advisor, mentioned in an email to club members that they will be treating some of the future meetings like “writing workshops” in order to give each other “detailed, constructive feedback on each other’s writing.”

All students are encouraged to email Jesse Hausler to receive updates and reminders about upcoming Creative Writing Club events. His email is jesse.hausler@texarkanacollege.edu.

The TC Players, Texarkana College’s theatre club, will be having their first meeting on Thursday, Sept. 14 at 12:30 p.m. in the Stilwell building.

All of the mentioned organizations will have a table at the Fall Fest on Sept. 20, along with other campus clubs and organizations for students to enjoy.
