Texarkana College Food Bank

By Misty Jones

Texarkana College, with the help of Harvest Texarkana, will be opening its own food bank, located in the Career Education Center (CEC), to help students in need.

Katie Jewel, Accelerate Texarkana Program Coordinator, is managing the project. The Food Bank is scheduled to start serving students on June 1.

To kick start the program, Lee Williams, Director of Recruitment, is holding a competition among the campus clubs and organizations. The club with the most donations wins a pizza party. The competition began April 1 and runs until April 29.

Donations should be non-perishable food items such as canned goods, cereal, bagged rice, and boxed potatoes. Donation boxes are located in the Career Education Center, Humanities, Chemistry, Social Sciences, the Media Center, and the Business Office. Everyone is encouraged to donate.

Once open, the Food Bank will cater to current students who are referred by a faculty or staff member. Students assisted by the program will receive a standard box, which will include items such as canned tuna, green beans, peanut butter, cereal and bagged rice.

“We hope to eventually add hygiene products, as well as scarves and mittens in the winter,” Jewel says.
