Distinguished Lecture Series: Omens in the Sky
March 6, 2018 @ 6:00 pm
How eclipses, comets, and asteroids have influenced history
Few things in the sky have produced more awe and superstition than eclipses, comets, and asteroids. From the dawn of history, mankind has believed the heavens were timeless and unchanging. Any changes were viewed with suspicion and thought to bring bad tidings – even today, some cultures still view these celestial events with misgiving. In this talk, you’ll learn about the nature and causes of these events, along with what effects they’ve had on the planet, how they’ve affected human history, and what we can expect in the future.
Featured lecturer Delbert Dowdy is a professor of physics at Texarkana College and has taught astronomy courses for more than 30 years.
