Bladesmithing School

All Bladesmithing courses will be taught in Washington, Arkansas in a replica of a one-room schoolhouse and a stable/barn that blends in with the old-time atmosphere of the town, also known as Old Washington Historic Park. The school consists of a modern classroom in addition to the work area which includes six forges, 12 anvils, six grinders, four hammers, work benches and related tools.

This course is designed to meet OSHA training requirement (29 CFR 1910.178(l) (1) for the experienced forklift operator. WELDING BASICS

Classes will be available Monday-Thursday from 3:30-5:30 p.m. at Texarkana College. Training can either be scheduled on an as needed basis by local employers or individual participants may attend regularly scheduled classes below. Employers/students may choose from a 32-hour (4-week) program or 64-hour (6-week) program based on their training needs. Students will receive a Texarkana College certificate of completion at the end of the course.

Professional Academies

EMT ACADEMY

This 12-week program is provided in a hybrid format which combines online interactive lectures, hands-on classroom sessions for skills and scenario practice.  It also includes clinical rotations in the hospital setting and on an ambulance.  When completed, candidates will be prepared to challenge the National Registry EMT exam and apply for state licensure.  Students will complete 48 hours of classroom learning, 48 hours of online learning, and 72 total hours of clinicals (36 hours in hospital and 36 hours with ALS EMS).

Upon successful completion, candidates will be eligible to apply for National Registry EMT examination and certification.  Out EMT courses are also approved by the Arkansas Department of Health, Section of EMS and the Texas Department of State Health Services.  There are several pre-course requirements: including physical exams and immunizations, urine drug screens and background checks that must be done before you are accepted.

FIRE ACADEMY

This program is a 14-week academy designed to prepare trainees for a career as a firefighter. The academy meets all requirements of the Texas Commission on Fire Protection (TCFP). Trainees who successfully complete the academy will be eligible for the certification exam given by the TCFP. Upon completion of the academy, the successful passing of the state written exam, and completion of emergency medical training, trainees can certify as structure firefighters with the State of Texas.

PROFESSIONAL DRIVING ACADEMY

Ready to get on the fast track to a high-demand career? This 5 week, 200-hour course is a full comprehensive training for a Class A CDL.
The program includes specific training for combination tractor-trailer operations and safety and includes training for Doubles, Triples, Tankers and Hazmat Endorsements.

Students receive 40-hours of classroom training to prepare for their CDL permit test and additional 160-hours of road training to prepare for the CDL Road Test. Tuition includes DOT physical and drug test prior to class start, CDL permit fees and CDL license.

Certified Nurse Aide Course

The Certified Nurse Aide Course at Texarkana College is a course designed to prepare students to successfully complete the state certification test. This 100-hour course prepares entry level nursing assistants to achieve a level of knowledge, skills, and abilities essential to provide basic care to patients and/or residents of hospitals, assisted living and long-term care facilities. The course consists of 60 hours of classroom theory and lab instruction, and 40 hours of clinical experience.

Prior approval of individuals’ compliance with course prerequisites must be obtained for acceptance into the course. Online registration for this course is unavailable. More information available in the Course Information/Prerequisite Packet.

 

Dental Assisting Course

The Dental Assisting course prepares students for entry-level positions and covers the relevant material necessary to successfully complete the Texas State Board Dental Exam for Dental Assistants. The course includes a CPR certification. More information available in the Course Information Packet.

 

Medical Administrative Assistant

This course provides students with instruction on the medical administrative assisting profession, interpersonal skills, medical ethics and law, medical terminology, basic insurance billing & coding, telephone techniques, scheduling appointments, medical records management and management of practice finances. Review the Course Information packet for more information.

 

Medication Aide Course

This 144-hour course is designed according to the specifications of the Texas Department of Aging and Disability Services, Certified Medication Aide Program. The course consists of 124 hours of classroom instruction, 10 hours of clinical practice and 10 hours of skills check off by a supervising RN.

Registrants must be a Certified Nurse Aide in good standing in the State of Texas, and currently working in a Long Term Care facility at the time the course begins, or currently working as a Patient Care Assistant in a Long-Term Care Facility at least 90 days prior to the course start date and at the time the course begins. Registrants must receive prior approval from the Allied Health Coordinator in the Continuing Education Division, to be accepted into the course. Please review the Course Information/Pre-requisite packet for requirements and instructions.

This course is approved by the Arkansas Workforce Commission for funding opportunities.

This comprehensive 80-hour program will prepare students to work as a pharmacy technician in a retail or other pharmacy setting and to take the Certified Pharmacy Technician certification exam. This course is approved by the Texas and Arkansas Workforce Commission for 100% funding if the applicant meets approval requirements. In addition to classroom lecture and labs, this program includes an 80-hour clinical externship so participants can gain on-the-job training through a local pharmacy.

Participants must meet course pre-requisites to be eligible to participate in the externship that occurs after course completion.

Clinical Medical Assistant Course

This program will train students to assist physicians by performing functions related to the clinical responsibilities of a medical office. Instruction includes among other things preparing patients for examination and treatment, routine laboratory procedures, diagnostic testing, technical aspects of phlebotomy and the cardiac life cycle (EKG testing).

This program includes 140 hours of classroom lecture, hands-on lab experience, and a clinical externship opportunity at a local healthcare provider. To be eligible for the clinical externship, students must successfully complete the 140-hour coursework and meet course prerequisites. Upon successful completion of this program, students will be eligible to take the Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) examination. This course is approved by the Texas and Arkansas Workforce Commission for funding opportunities.

Electrocardiograph (EKG) Technician

This comprehensive 50 hour EKG Technician Certification Program prepares students to function as EKG Technicians and to take the ASPT – Electrocardiograph (EKG) Technician exam and other National Certification Exams. This course will include important practice and background information on anatomy and physiology of the heart, medical disease processes, medical terminology, medical ethics, and legal aspects of patient contact, electrocardiography and stress testing. Additionally, students will practice with EKG equipment and perform hands on labs including introduction to the function and proper use of the EKG machine, the normal anatomy of the chest wall for proper lead placement, 12-lead placement, and other clinical practices. Medical Billing and Coding

This combined 80-hour billing and coding course offers the skills needed to solve insurance billing problems, how to manually file claims (using the CPT and ICD- 10 manual), complete common insurance forms, trace delinquent claims, appeal denied claims and use generic forms to streamline billing procedures. The course covers the following areas: CPT (Introduction, Guidelines, Evaluation and Management), specialty fields (such as surgery, radiology and laboratory), ICD-10 (Introduction and Guidelines) and basic claims processes for medical insurance and third party reimbursements. Students will learn how to find the service and codes using manuals, (CPT, ICD-10 and HCPCS). More information available in the Course Information/Pre-Requisite Packet.

 

NCLEX – RN REVIEW

Graduate nurses will have the opportunity to prepare for State Board exams by attending this course. Participants must register through Nursing Education Consultants instead of Texarkana College.

NURSE REFRESHER (RN/LVN RE-ENTRY NURSING UPDATE)

This course will provide students who have completed the didactic portion of the nurse refresher course through Austin Community College website and need to complete 16 hours of skill demonstration and preceptorship of 72 hours at a local facility to re-enter nursing licensure.

There are prerequisites required for this portion of the course and may be obtained by contacting the Allied Health Coordinator at 903-823-3384.

Phlebotomy Technician Course

Skill development in the performance of a variety of blood collection methods using proper techniques and standard precautions. Emphasis on infection prevention, patient identification, specimen labeling, quality assurance, specimen handling, processing, accessioning, professionalism, ethics, and medical terminology.
