Alumni Spotlight: Lynette Jackson

Graduate Lynette Jackson“I keep coming back to Texarkana College.”

During her career with the Texas Department of Criminal Justice’s Barry Telford Unit in New Boston, 2014 TC grad Lynette Jackson had a dream: to start a nonprofit to help the women she worked with every day.

When she graduated from Texarkana College with her Associate of Arts in Behavioral Science in 2014, she made her dream a reality.

“Since graduation, my dream of starting a non-profit transitional housing program is coming true,” she said. “Due to my experience at Texarkana College, I was equipped to reach down within myself and discover what I wanted to do with the rest of my life. Broken Leaf Transitional Housing, Inc. is the realization of a dream.”

Broken Leaf Transitional Housing, Inc. is a 24-month in-house residential faith-based nonprofit organization for female offenders. The nonprofit focuses on helping female offenders become self-sufficient, including training in employment readiness, dressing for success, individual and group counseling sessions, case management, educational assistance, substance abuse counseling, stress coping skills, time management, spiritual studies, health and fitness, and transportation. The organization’s programs and services are designed to fit the unique needs of women coming out of correctional settings.

That’s why Lynette, founder and executive director of Broken Leaf Transitional Housing, Inc., keeps coming back to TC.

“Texarkana College is a huge part of our program because many of our clients will continue their education there, and many will start right there,” she said. “TC is a great place to start or start over. It was for me.”
