2009 Registration Information & Contest Rules


EAST  TEXAS
  FFA / 4-H  CONTESTS

 

Contests:  Land,  Forestry/Woodlands,  and Plant Id./Forage Evaulation

 

Date:  March 27, 2009,  10 a. m.

 

Location:  Clear Springs Area of Lake Wright Patman.  Travel

Highway 59 to Texas FR 2148, turn onto FR 2148 and follow the signs to the Clear Springs pavilion.  Upon arrival at the pavilion, secure contestants’ badges for the various contests.  TC team leaders will sort the teams into appropriate judging groups prior to the beginning of the contests.

 

Registration:  Please register you teams online by March 26, 2009 by emailing

sfrancis@texarkanacollege.edu.  Include the names of team members as well as alternate contestants.  A legal size team consists of 3 or 4 members.  Upon arrival for the contest on
March 27, contestant  badges will be issued at the pavilion prior to the beginning of the contest.

 

Land Judging:  Judging will be according to Texas Land Judging rules. 

                         Score cards will be issued at the judging site.

Forestry/Woodlands:  This contest will utilize the same format and rules as

                                     local conservation district  contests. 

 

Plant Identification/Forages:  Contestants will –

·        Identify 20 plants chosen from native and improved grasses, legumes, and weed species.

·        Answer 30 questions dealing with forage evaluation.  The questions will be bvased upon formation contained in chapters 16 and 30 of Southern Forages, 3rd. ed;  ( 15 questions from each chapter) by Ball, Hoveland, and Lacefield, published by the Potash and Phosphate Institute and Foundation for Agronomic Research. 

·        Evaluate and place three hay samples based on quality characteristics.

 

Tabulation and Results:  Scorecards will be scored and tabulated as quickly as possible after the

conclusion of the contests.  Results will be posted on the Agricultrual Science website Friday afternoon, March 27.

Awards:  Plaques will be mailed to the top three teams and the high scoring individual in each contest.
