The purpose of this chart is for quick reference between popular hook types and brands.  There are more thorough charts available, but that is not my purpose here.  With the exception of Mustad 3399 and 3366 hooks, this chart lists practically all the hooks I use in tying trout flies.  A tier will occasionally find a need for hooks other than these, so have at it!

The majority of hooks I use are Mustad.  Economy is an issue, but never at the expense of performance.  All the above brands should accomplish the task.

I'm not certain of the Orvis numbers because I've never used Orvis hooks, so I borrowed the information from other charts.

Happy tying!

Try these:

Mustad 3366 -- This is a popular all-around hook that can be used for tying flies from size 14 up to bass flies.  I use it for tying soft hackles (size 14) and egg patterns.  It is very similar to the 3906 but has a straight eye.

Mustad 3399 -- This is a popular hook available in a wide range of sizes. It's uses are similar to those of the 3366, except it has a turned down eye and is available in size 16 & 18, which makes it an excellent hook for smaller soft hackles and midges.  It is very similar to the 3906, except the 3399 has a balled eye and the 3906 has a tapered eye.
