Using telnet to check your TC email from home
(or anywhere)
Telnet is a program built into your windows 95/98 operating
system. These instructions are for PC compatable computers
only. This program will work with any internet service provider
including AOL.
Starting Telnet
You start telnet by clicking on the start button. (These directions assume
you are connected your internet service provider.)
You then click run.
Next enter telnet is.tc.cc.tx.us into the
blank line after open.
Click OK (This will start the program)
Log onto the System
Telnet will then ask for your login name and password. Type these
in and push the enter key after each.
The next screen looks like this.
Starting Pine (The email program)
You will next be using a program called pine. Pine is not on your
computer it is on the server. Pine is a text-based system.
It will not display any kind of graphics. Type pine
into the command line and press enter.
You will get the screen below
You will get the screen above the first time you use pine--after this the
screen will be like the one below. You can read all of it or type
e
to
exit and then you will get something similar to the screen below.
Using Pine
From this point you can read mail, compose messages, etc. Push the
i
key to see a list of your messages. Push C to compose, etc.
Below is what happens when you push i and
have messages.
Notice the list of options available at the bottom of the screen.
You can use the up and down arrows to go to the message you want.
To read a message hit enter.
