Journalism courses offered at TC:




COMM 1129, 1130, 2129 and 2130 Journalism Practicum - Supervised practice and instruction in journalism, photography, advertising sales, newspaper layout, publication procedures. Students will work on the TC News staff. Required to take along with all journalism courses. One credit hour each.

COMM 1307 Introduction to Mass Communication - This course is a survey of the media of mass communications as well as an examination of the evolution of today's concepts in mass communication.

COMM 1316 News Photography I - An introductory course for beginners in black and white photography, the course teaches use of 35 mm cameras, accessories and procedure; basic introduction to darkroom techniques; emphasis on photographic techniques used by photojournalists in newspapers and magazines. Students must provide acceptable adjustable 35 mm camera, film and photo paper for lab use. Prerequisite: COMM 2311 or concurrent enrollment in COMM 2311 or consent of instructor.

COMM 2311 News Writing and Reporting I - A study of the gathering and reporting of news is the emphasis of this course. The whole range of the reporter's work is covered by lecture and actual practice with students working as reporters and photographers for the TC News. Students take this class first. 3 credit hours. Practicum required.

COMM 2315 Reporting II - Continuation of COMM 2311 with a comprehensive study of copy editing for errors of fact and interpretation of English and newspaper style. Emphasis is placed on more complex stories and more specialized types of stories. Headline writing and proof reading are introduced. Students will be members of the TC News staff. 3 credit hours. Practicum required. Prerequisite COMM 2311.

COMM 2309 News Editing - A study of the editing process for newspapers and newsmagazines. Emphasis placed on grammar, style, tone and the use of newspaper technology as it applies to the editing process. Students will be members of the TC News staff. 3 credit hours. Practicum required. Prerequisite COMM 2311.

COMM 2305 Editing and Layout - This course develops an understanding of the editing and layout process with an emphasis on accuracy and fairness and exposes students to the principles and techniques of design. Students will be members of the TC News staff. Practicum required. Prerequisite COMM 2311.
