Course Requirements

This course consists of lecture, lab (program assignments), and a small amount of homework (not to be confused with the program assignments).

 

Textbook:  QuickBASIC and QBASIC Using Modular Structure (second edition) or GWBASIC. By Julia Case Bradley. Other text will be supplied.

 

Other Requirements:  You will need 2 floppy disks for this course…one for back-up and SVGAQB version 2.6 Super VGA Graphics Library floppy disk furnished free of charge ($5.00 lab fee)

 

We will cover the following areas:

  1. Evolution of computer graphics
  2. How graphics work…the parts
  3. SCREEN modes…number of pixels, number of colors, number of buffers, and size of buffers
  4. Standard QBasic commands: SCREEN, COLOR, PSET, PRESET, LINE, CIRCLE, PAINT, and PALETTE
  5. Text and graphics, text graphics
  6. More subroutines: PAINT with patterns, GET, PUT, (AND, OR, XOR, and PSET)
  7. A little TRIG…SIN, COS, and TAN
  8. Projects: Collage, Draw/Paint, Game1, Motion1, and Game2
  9. Research Papers (2, one page, single spaced using WP): One on graphics hardware, one on graphics software
  10. Control of keyboard
  11. Control of mouse
  12. Random numbers
  13. Loading/saving graphics files
  14. Bar graphs, pie charts, line graphs, rotation and various other minor assignments

 

Testing

We will attempt to make this class primarily project oriented…no tests!


 

Grading           (subjective)

The grade for this course will be computed as follows:

            Major Project #1 20%

            Major Project #2 20%

            Major Project #3 20%

            Minor Projects 20%

            Collage 5%

            Draw/Paint 8%

            Research Papers 2%

            Attendance & Participation 5%

 

Additional Information

 

¨  Withdrawals:  Any student who officially withdraws from a course by the assigned drop date and before the student has been dropped from the course by the instructor will receive a “W”. Students are expected to attend, regularly, all classes in the course for which they are enrolled. Responsibility for work missed because of illness, school business, or other circumstances is placed upon the student.

 

            Last day to Drop Classes—Fall 2002                       Friday, November 15.

 

¨  Cheating:  Cheating will not be tolerated. Any student caught cheating will be dropped from the class with a grade of “F” by the instructor and the Dean of Students may take disciplinary action.

 

¨  Food or Drinks:  Students are not allowed to have food or drinks in the classroom or lab. The cost of damage to computer equipment can be significant due to a minor mishap.

 

¨  Cellular Phone or Pagers:  A student may not bring a cellular phone or pager to class without prior written approval from the Dean of Students.

 

¨  Other Information:  From the 2001-2002 Student Handbook:  Performance of sexually explicit acts on campus (or public viewing and/or distribution of sexually oriented material) constitutes a breach of conduct.

 

The viewing of pornography is prohibited and will result in being dropped from class with the grade of “F”, and the Dean of Students will take disciplinary action. The use of student e-mail for obscene or pornographic purposes is prohibited. Any form of harassment will result in dismissal from class with the grade of “F”, and the Dean of Students will take disciplinary action.
