CERTIFICATION COURSES

CLINICAL MEDICAL ASSISTANT
Tues. & Thurs., June 17-Sept. 18 | 6-9:30 p.m. & Saturdays, 6/28, 7/12, 7/26, 8/23, 9/6, 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m.
13 wks. | 140 hrs. + 160 hrs. Clinical Externship |$2,400 (includes all textbooks)

This program will train students to assist physicians by performing functions related to the clinical responsibilities of a medical office. Instruction includes among other things preparing patients for examination and treatment, routine laboratory procedures, diagnostic testing, technical aspects of phlebotomy and the cardiac life cycle. Students will review important topics including phlebotomy, pharmacology, the proper use and administration of medications, taking and documenting vital signs, cardiology including proper lead placements, a professional workplace behavior, ethics and the legal aspects of healthcare.

This program includes 140 hours of classroom lecture and hands-on labs and a clinical externship opportunity at a local healthcare provider. Note: Upon successful completion of this program the student will be eligible to sit for the National Healthcare Association (NHA) Certified Medical Assistant (CCMA) national examination..

 CERTIFIED NURSE AIDE COURSE
MTTH,  June 16 – Sept. 18 | 5-9 p.m. | 12 wks. | 144 hrs. | $700 including books

Texarkana College is a certified Nurse Aide Competency Training and Evaluation provider for the state of Texas. This 144 hour course prepares entry level nursing assistants to achieve a level of knowledge, skills and abilities essential to provide basic care to patients and/or residents of hospitals, assisted living and long-term care facilities. as patient care technicians or home-health aides. The course consists of 80 classroom theory and lab instruction, and 64 hours of clinical experience at a local nursing home facility. The following list of pre-requisits are required to participate in the course and participants must present documentation before acceptance to the program.   Arkansas Workforce Commission approved.  Instructor:  ArthAlia Hardy, RN

EKG Technician Course
Mon. & Wed., June 16 – Aug. 4 | 6-9:30 p.m. | 50 hrs. | 8 wks. | $1,000 (textbooks included)

 This comprehensive 50 hour EKG Technician Certification Program prepares students to function as EKG Technicians and to take the ASPT – Electrocardiograph (EKG) Technician exam and other National Certification Exams. This course will include important practice and background information on anatomy and physiology of the heart, medical disease processes, medical terminology, medical ethics, and legal aspects of patient contact, electrocardiography and stress testing. Additionally, students will practice with EKG equipment and perform hands on labs including introduction to the function and proper use of the EKG machine, the normal anatomy of the chest wall for proper lead placement, 12-lead placement and other clinical practices.

MEDICATION AIDE FOR LONG TERM CARE COURSE
MTTh, June 16 – Oct. 2 | 6-9 p.m. | 16 wks | 144 hrs | $600 including books

This 144 hour course is designed according to the specifications for approval by the Texas Department of Aging and Disability Services. Participants will spend a total of 100 hours in classroom instruction and training, 40 hours of return skills demonstration laboratory, and 10 hours of clinical experience including clinical observation and skills demonstration under the direct supervision of a licensed nurse in a facility.

Persons must be 18 years of age, with a high school diploma or GED, currently working as a Certified Nurse Aide in a Texas licensed nursing home facility and on the Texas Nurse Aide Registry, or be a non-licensed, direct care staff person working in a resident care home or prison for at least 90 days prior to enrollment.

This course is approved through the Arkansas Workforce Commission for funding to those applicants who meet criteria stipulated by these agencies. Contact

NCLEX-PN

This course is designed for graduate nurses to prepare for state board exams. Cost Includes book and diagnostic test. Participants MUST ENROLL with Nursing Education Consultants instead of Texarkana College Continuing Education. For enrollment cost and registration call 1-800-933-PASS (7277).

PHARMACY TECHNICIAN PROGRAM
M,TH, June 17 – Sept. 2 | 6-9:30 p.m.|  80 hrs.| 12 wks. plus 80 hrs. externship| $1,400 includes books & externship

This comprehensive 80 hour program will prepare students to work as a pharmacy technician in a retail or other pharmacy setting and to take the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board’s PTCB exam.  Course content includes: pharmacy medical terminology, the history of pharmacy, the pharmacy practice in multiple environments, pharmacy calculations and measurements, reading and interpreting prescriptions and defining drugs by generic and brand names.  Through classroom lecture and hands on labs, students will review dosage calculations, drug classifications, the “top 200 drugs”, I.V. flow rates, sterile compounding, dose conversions, aseptic technique, the handling of sterile products, total parental nutrition (TPN), dispensing of prescriptions, inventory control and billing and reimbursement.

In addition to classroom lecture and labs, this program includes a clinical externship through a local pharmacy.  To be eligible for a clinical externship, students must successfully complete the 80 hour program, submit to a thorough background check, drug screening and meet other course requirements listed below.

1. Participant must be 18 years of age & provide copy of high school diploma or its equivalent.
2. Physical -$30
3. TB skin test – $20
4. Drug screening – $30
5. Texas State Board of Pharmacy Registration – $53
6. Finger printing – $42
7. Immunization record that includes Hepatitis B series of three injections.

RN REFRESHER COURSE (RE-ENTRY NURSING UPDATE) CLINICAL

This course will provide students who have completed the didactic web site through Austin Community College and need to complete 16 hours of skill demonstration and 72 hours of pre-ceptorship at a local facility.
