Journalism

The TC Journalism program educates not only future news professionals, but also news consumers. Building on a strong liberal arts curriculum, the journalism course of study offers concentrations in print and design and emphasizes professional responsibility, writing skills, research techniques, and the cultivation of a broad field of knowledge. The program also offers opportunities in the emerging field of media convergence. In addition to their journalism courses, students can take courses in history, political science, economics and other areas that will enhance their approach to the substance of journalism. Students so trained will better understand the issues they cover as journalists, and they will be better able to evaluate coverage as news consumers.

The TC Journalism Program is an active member of the Texas Intercollegiate Press Association and the Texas Community College Journalism Association, both of which offer opportunities for competition and enrichment. Selected students attend the TCCJA convention in the fall semester and the TIPA convention in the spring semester. Students enrolled in sophomore level courses of the program become members of the award-winning TC News staff, allowing them to build a solid portfolio of work before transferring to a four-year university.
