Mr. Ira Robinson
1998 Distinguished Faculty

No endorsement is more meaningful, or more credible, than those that come from one's peers. One of Ira Robinson's former colleagues describes him as, "...an excellent example, both personally and professionally; a man who was truly devoted to his students, and our institution."  He continues, "Ira's students were equally devoted to him, and he had their utmost trust and respect. Ira was also very well respected by the faculty and the administration, as he was always willing to to take on tough committee assignments. He was continually called upon to serve, because of the through professional job he did on each committee. He came prepared, and worked hard to get the job done.

The trust and respect Ira's students had for him is evident in the following exerpts from two letters that accompanied his nomination:

When I began my studies at TC, I was undecided as to my major. Thanks to the dedication and inspiration of Ira Robinson I have chosen economics as my major. Even after undergoing laryngectomy, Mr. Robinson's perseverance and dedication have kept him effective in the classroom. I have finally found my own path through graduation into my professional future, thanks to Ira Robinson's outstanding instruction and guidance. Another student writes, I enrolled in economics because of my degree requirement, and admittedly, my expectations of this class were very low. Professor Ira Robinson made the classes not only interesting, but enjoyable. More-over, I found myself able to understand the nightly news thanks to the understanding of economics Mr. Robinson provided me! I am no longer taking classes, simply because they are required; I am enrolled in courses that are both interesting and practical to my everyday living. Mr. Robinson's enthusiasm for both economics and higher education have inspired me to complete my undergraduate training after a 20 year absence from the college classroom.
One of the criteria that must be considered in selecting the Distinguished Faculty Honoree each year, is that, through their work, they have displayed a very high commitment to their professional discipline, along with a passion for teaching. It is clear from the quotes above that Ira Robinson embodies that statement completely. His high commitment to his professional discipline was admired by all of his colleagues, and his passion for teaching served to inspire each student whose life he touched.
