We live in a rapidly changing world in which the population continues to grow and the demands for food and fiber are ever present. Most of the population of the United States live in urban and suburban settings which means that efficient systems of production, processing, marketing, and distribution of food and fiber product must be maintained. Trained agricultural professionals will continue to be needed to fill technical and managerial positions in the numerous agricultural fields.

The multifaceted agricultural industry employs a large percentage of the labor force in the United States in more than 500 career areas. Career opportunities for the agricultural graduate are found both in private industry and with government agencies. These include financial institutions, public utilities, cooperatives, insurance companies, real estate firms, food processing industries, feed manufacturing firms, chemical, seed and machinery companies. Positions are found in sales, management, marketing, product development and quality control. Employment opportunities with governmental agencies include positions with conservation agencies, parks and wildlife agencies, forestry service, agricultural extension services and agricultural teaching at both the high school and college level.

Meeting the challenges and opportunities in agriculture requires careful preparation and study.
